Observation Narrative
Avery fertile, highly calcareous floodplain terrace with several very large trees and many nutrient demanding species. This is an unusual habitat for the Virginia Coastal Plain and one of the easternmost sites in SE Virginia for Acer barbatum, Aesculus sylvatica, and Trillium sessile. No evidence of recent disturbance other than exotics. Species richness is low for such a rich site; a spring visit would no doubt add a number of early-maturing and ephemeral herbs to the plot. A 114 cm DBH, 39 m tall Quercus shumardii in the plot was, for a short time, the state champion of its species.
